Vana — Privacy Policy

Vana ("we," "us") is an ambient social focus app: you run timed focus sessions alongside other people's animal companions, grow a companion of your own, and keep a private garden. This policy explains what we collect, why, and your choices. We've kept it short and plain because that's the whole point of Vana.

We do not sell your data, show ads, or use third-party advertising or analytics trackers. We do keep our own basic, first-party usage counts inside Vana (see "Focus & app activity" below) — these never leave our systems, never contain your name, email or anything you've typed, and are never shared.

Information we collect

We only collect what's needed to run the app:

Using Vana without an account. You don't have to sign in. When you first open the app we create an anonymous account for you automatically so your companion and progress have somewhere to live. It holds no personal information — no name, no email, no password — and is tied to this device only. If you lose the device or delete the app, that progress cannot be recovered, which is why we offer signing in.
Account information (only if you sign in). Signing in with Apple is optional. If you choose it, we receive your name and email address, and your existing progress is linked to it rather than replaced. You can use Apple's Hide My Email to share a private relay address instead of your real one. We never receive your Apple password.
Profile. A display name (which you can change), and the public stats shown on your profile: focus streak, lifetime focus time, your companion's age, and the number of eggs you've hatched.
Focus & app activity. Focus sessions and minutes, honey balance, the companions and items you own, your garden layout, referral code, and a "last seen" timestamp used to show presence during a shared session.
First-party usage events. A small set of app events (for example: a session started, an invite redeemed) recorded against your account id so we can see whether the app is working. No names, no email, no free text, no third-party analytics services, and no advertising identifiers.

We do not collect your location, contacts, photos, health data, or any advertising identifiers, and we don't track you across other apps or websites.

What other people can see

Vana is social by design. While you're in a shared Grove session, other participants in that same session can see your display name, your companion (its name and cosmetics), and your public profile stats (streak, hours focused, days grown, eggs hatched). They can also open a read-only view of your garden — the decorations you've placed, and nothing else.

That is the entire list. There is no chat, no messaging, no photos or other media, no feed, no way to browse or search for other people, and no way for anyone to contact you. It is visible only to the few people sharing a session with you at that moment, and only for as long as that session lasts. People who are not in a session with you cannot see any of it.

How we use your information

To provide the app: run sessions, save your companions, garden, and progress.
To match you into a shared grove with room and show who's present.
To show your profile and stats to people in your current session.
To credit honey, eggs, streaks, and referral rewards.
To keep the service working and prevent abuse.

We do not use your information for advertising or sell it to anyone.

How your information is stored and shared

Supabase hosts our database and authentication. Your data is stored on Supabase's infrastructure and protected by per-user access rules so other users can only see the limited profile information described above. Data is encrypted in transit.
Apple provides Sign in with Apple. Apple's handling of your sign-in is governed by Apple's own privacy policy.

We share data only with these service providers, as needed to run Vana, and when required by law.

Data retention and deletion

We keep your information while your account exists. You can permanently delete your account at any time in the app: Settings → Delete account. This removes your account and associated data (companions, sessions, garden, stats). Deletion is immediate and cannot be undone.

Security

We use industry-standard measures, including encryption in transit and row-level access controls so each person can only reach their own data and the limited public profile of people in their session. No method is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information.

Children

Vana is not directed to children under 13 (or under 16 in the EEA). We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we'll delete it.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, or delete your personal data. In-app account deletion fulfills the right to erasure for the data we hold. For other requests, contact us below.

Changes to this policy

If we make material changes, we'll update the effective date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app.
